What is Feng Shui?

What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui (the Mandarin pronunciation is foong soyee, the Cantonese pronunciation is Fung Shwey) literally means wind and water, two of the most fundamental forms of life’s energy.

Feng Shui is about understanding the secrets of how energy moves in our surroundings and how the style of our buildings and interiors affect us at a subtle level. It involves harnessing beneficial chi to enhance the success and good fortune of the individual.

Feng Shui is also:

bullet

art of "assessing" the quality of life through observations and analysis of a person's living environment.

bullet

a metaphysical science where one learns to recognise and tap into the chi (cosmic energies) of the living environment to help the many endeavours in life. The study and presence of chi is today recognised by Western medical doctors when it comes to acupuncture and acupressure.

bullet

about chi in the living environment and how to harness and use it to help specific goals in our everyday lives.

bullet

a form of "forecasting". The nature of Chi is cyclical and as such, can be calculated. Practitioners of Feng Shui have learnt to assess outcomes based on the influence of Chi upon a particular living environment.

The Language of Feng Shui

Chi

Chi (qi) is the energy, or force, that connects people with their surroundings. Chi circulates the earth, it circulates the atmosphere and it circulates within and around your body. This energy is in a perpetual state of change, as are you, whether you are aware of it or not. It is vital to your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well being. Without change there is stagnation.

Chi is described as many things – energy, cosmic breath, life force – but it is more than that. It is tangible yet intangible and elusive. It is expressed in everything we do, everything we see and everything we surround ourselves with. Each of us possesses a certain quality of chi. It carries our bodies. Yet its characteristics and the ways in which it moves is different within each of us. It is the breath essential to maintaining physical, environmental, and emotional balance. When the Chi in your body is blocked or out of balance, you may experience illness, depression or aches and pains. When the Chi in your environment is out of balance, it will reflect in your life. You may experience relationship difficulties, problems in business or general “bad luck”

There is a chi of time, of direction, of the stars, of the movement of the planet, of numbers and characters, of colours and shapes, of seasons, people and their careers, of stillness and of movement. It is all encompassing.

Feng Shui is a way of understanding chi and of how it moves in our environment. It is a way of understanding how our environment impacts upon us over time and how to use that understanding to help fulfil our goals and dreams.

How do I know if I have good Feng Shui?

Despite popular opinion, Feng Shui is less about how a place feels and more about your personal experience while living or working in any given place.

Simply put, if you have good experiences, you no doubt have good Feng Shui. If you have difficult or unfortunate experiences, you likely have lousy Feng Shui.

Indications of unfortunate or bad Feng Shui can include:
